How much do indie hackers make?
Updated · First published · By Coffounder
Short answer: the indie hacker in the middle of our list makes $6.6K a month. We looked at the newest MRR that 204 founders posted on X. 49 make under $1K a month. 92 make $10K or more, and 26 make $100K or more.
Every number comes from the founder's own post, with a link, so you can read it yourself. MRR means monthly recurring revenue: the money that comes in every month from people who pay every month.
Keep one thing in mind. People post their good months, and founders who make $0 mostly stay quiet. So if you could count every indie hacker, not only the ones who post, the middle would be lower than ours.

Growth is the change over their last 12 months of numbers. A dash means we have one number in that time. The founder tracker lists all 204.
Why does everyone on X seem to make $10K a month?
Because the people who post are not everyone. 45% of the founders on our list make $10K a month or more. Founders with small numbers post less, so X feels richer than it is.
The big numbers are real, but most took years. In their own words:
I made this post exactly a year ago about my goals for @chatbase for 2025. We’re now doing over $8M ARR and growing fast. We had a lot of wins in 2025 but also made a lot of mistakes. I think the biggest mistake bootstrapped…

How much MRR do you need to quit your job?
There is no magic number. It depends on what you spend each month, where you live and how much you have saved.
Here is what founders on our list said when they made the jump:
Not many people know this about me but I was knee deep into Google + Meta ads from 2017-2021. This was right before I went full time to build my Shopify app (currently at $500k ARR+) Stumbled across a copy of one of my old…

Can you trust these numbers?
We can't see anyone's bank account. A post on X is a claim, so we show it as one: every number links to the post it came from, with the date. Our filter drops posts that sell a course, posts about somebody else's app, and goals that were not reached yet. Read how we check.
If a number looks too good, open the post and read the replies. People on X are quick to ask for proof.
